Another Paul Potts

For those of you who don't know who Paul Potts is, he was a phone salesman that went on the show, Britain's Got Talent (Simon Cowell is 1 of 3 judges on there) and sang opera. He was very outwardly unappealing but his voice was AMAZING. He ended up winning the show and put out a cd of which I am a big fan. I've always been a huge fan of extreme underdogs that really get the recognition, respect, and love they deserve in the end (instead of the judgment that they had been receiving).

Anyways, so here's Susan Boyle. An unemployed, frumpy-looking, 47 yr old that comes on Britain's Got Talent this season. Check her out (I can't embed the video but here's the site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY). She sings I dreamed a dream from Les Miserables. It's beautiful to watch and her voice is magnificent. Reminds me of Paul Potts. I cried every time I watched Paul sing. I hope she wins and achieves her dreams just like him.

  1. I loved that video, but you know, it made me angry/sad as all getout with our world.. I'm not just talking the media/entertainment industry, but every person in that audience with scowls and skepticism. Why does beauty mean so many other things to us? Didn't people learn in their childhood from Beauty and the Beast or the Hunchback of Notre Dame or any of those things not to judge based on appearances? I'm not saying I'm innocent at all, but I think this habit has got to be one of the ugliest things humans do. Blech.

I hope she wins, too, but that she doesn't react as she did, as if she was so shocked like she didn't deserve it.. because she totally did!

  2. *by beauty, I of course mean 'worldly' conceptions of physical beauty.

  3. I actually really enjoy watching the shock on their faces. A good balance between shock and confidence is necessary I think. Cause on the one hand if she felt like she deserved it to the point where she felt like we owed it to her, then it becomes a cockiness and it becomes quite ugly.

I thought it was really beautiful to watch her reaction (I thought she was so cute!) and to watch other people's reaction to her reaction. To me, it exemplified a sort of innocence and naivete about her. It also made me really appreciate the blessings and opportunities we receive in life because they are in such stark contrast to the bad stuff that happens so often and so easily. It's somehow easier to be happy for someone if they have that kind of reaction than if they showed a kind of cockiness.

I'm not saying, of course, that she didn't deserve it. Of course she deserved it!
